To answer your question: There really isn't an easy way to change it.
It's not hard, just a real pain in the butt! I did just that today, and
I accidentally mis-aligned the plunger in the air flow regulator! Word
of advice- after you clean the air flow plunger, take some pliers and
PULL it up, back into place. The clips that hold the box together are a
major headache to put back on, as well. I don't want to scare you, or
anything, but just be prepared to spend at least 15 minutes pushing and
pulling that dang air flow meter-thing on top of the air box around,
until you finally find enough slack to work it free. Damn that little
flange of metal! I thought they would've fixed by now, as I had the same
problem on my `82 Coupe. I do remember the owners' manual saying
something about unscrewing the six screws on the meter, to take that off.
That turns out to be a pretty aggravating task as well, on the 85-87's,
at least. My suggestion is buy a K&N air filter, so you never have to
worry about it again! (Or until you drive through a desert, or
something.)
This is just my observation, and as a newcomer to this list, I bow to the
much more experienced Qlister's opinions. I hope I helped, though.
