Re: Fuel Pump Failure mode

Hi Osman,

Sounds like you have most of the bases covered for your trip to me. But, like
you said "many things could fail". I would suggest in addition to what you
wrote that you inspect all cooling system hoses, and particularly the plastic
parts, i.e. heater valve, after-run pump, and radiator.

The best advice I have (besides checking everything as best you can) is to get
(or upgrade to) AAA Plus. Not just for the extra distance flatbed towing
(which could be a godsend) but for the trip insurance if your car does have a
failure on the road. That extra $ will help get your car fixed, and even get
you a rent-a-racer to drive the rest of the way if need be (in other words
really good peace of mind). This was one of the first things I did when I went
from my old 4kq to my "newer" and "lower miles" 5ktq knowing it would take the
place of the 4kq as the family road trip car. It is like any other kind of
insurance...don't get it and you'll wish you had, get it and hopefully never
need it. It really is cheap though compared to the price of anticipated
spares. Also alot smaller and lighter to carry...let's see, spare key, AAA +
card, and a credit card with lotsa room = road trip ready ;-).

Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with AAA and tend to dislike the concept of
insurance but realize it is essential for many of us. AAA + just seems like
such a good deal for us that drive older high miles cars on long distance
trips--especialy when traveling with kids as I often do.
