temperature display light

The light had gone out on the dashboard temperature display on der
Uberwgn (95.5 S6 Avant).  I foolishly asked the service dept to change
the bulb next time I was in, not realizing that it couldn't possibly be
that simple on an Audi.  Of course, the LED has no bulb, the light is
just part of the display, and replacing the display unit would be around
$500.

Anybody have any good ideas about how to get this working again so I can
see the temp gauge at night without turning on the overhead light,
bending over, and squinting?  Without such an exorbitant charge...
