Intermittent A/C at startup

Now that der Uberwgn (along with my sorry ass) has been relocated from
Chicago to Houston, I am experiencing a lot of very hot days (102F in
mid-afternoon is typical).  And when I start der Uberwgn (95.5 S6 Avant)
in these conditions, the A/C is intermittent for about five to ten
minutes, on for a minute, off for a minute, all by itself.  After that
it works normally.

Any idea why this happens, if it's a problem or normal, anything that
can be done about it?
