The Control Head is the principle unit in the system, it's
the purdy thang with the LED display. The programmer is
the one with all the vacuum lines and the control cable
located above the passenger side footwell, but when it's
bad, the system defaults to maximum defrost, so the
compressor should be kicked in at this point. There is
also a refrigerant pressure switch, WOT switch, and
a few other things that can cause a compressor not
to kick in.
This is one of the few times that the Bentley excells
in diagnostic explanation. It goes through in very
clear detail how to check all the components of the
system and come up with the culprit for whatever isn't
functioning in the AC system. Beg, borrow or steal a
copy, you'll be happy you did.
