92 100 AC prob solved... Relay!

My 92 100 S AC stopped working, the failure was preceded by a "sometimes"
problem where there was no AC, but if you turned off the ignition and
restarted the car, it would come on and stay OK for the rest of a trip. In
its fully failed mode, the compressor would engage for a few seconds after
starting the engine, then turn off and never come back on. I thought it was
the multi temp sensor (since the temp guage was flakey). I replaced the
sensor, which cured the guage problem, but not the AC problem. Finally turned
out to be the AC relay in the big relay box under the hood. The new relay
from Audi is much smaller than the old one but costs over $70!!!!. Worth it to
have cold air again. Hope this info helps someone with a similar problem.
