Flat-Towing a VW Fox behind my '89 200q...
Yesterday, I ended up flat-towing my girlfriend's dead '89 VW Fox home from
the parking lot across the street from the office building where I work.
Even though it was 104 degrees out and I've got one of Scott Mockry's chips
installed (more ignition advance as well as boost), my '89 200q didn't seem
to mind the 22-mile trip at all. :^)
It DID take a bit of work to get the car ready to be towed, though. First,
I had to remove the bumper cover, drill a few holes in the bumper itself to
hold the tow bar brackets and figure out how to get a jack under it since
some cretins thoughtfully removed ALL FOUR WHEELS sometime the night before!
Even more interesting was the fact that the only 4x100 wheels I had quick
access to were the Ronal R8s that I've mounted Hoosier racing slicks
(8.5"x22.5"x15") on ... incredibly, they *just* cleared by enough that I was
able to tow the car home.
Less than a mile from my house, I was stopped by a police officer who wanted
to make sure the Fox had current tags on it since flat-towing an unlicensed
car is illegal in Arizona ... he did give me a bit of hassle about the tires
but after I explained what happened and how close I was to home, he let me
off with just a warning. (Like I'm *really* going to make a habit of towing
cars on $160 bias-ply racing slicks ... sheesh.)
Anyway, the reason I bring all this up is that I'm still trying to figure
out how the scrotum-poles who stole the wheels managed to get their jack out
from underneath the car. It was parked on a semi-dirt lot and there were no
obvious signs that anything untoward had happened ... is there some sort of
trick to this or what? I know it was definitely a major PITA for me to get
a jack underneath (ended up digging a hole on each side and then propped the
car up on a pair of jack stands so I could move the jack around to get a
second bite at it). Maybe I just need to think like a thief but I must
admit that this one has me stumped...
