83 GT Suspension

I'm a new subscriber to the list and am glad I found it. I have an 83 5 spd
coupe with 180k miles that I bought new. Has been a great car, still runs
great, pulls strong, no rust, no accidents, engine has never been open
except for routine maintenance. The car is, however, getting tired. I must
admit that I really have enjoyed the car and am now considering a major
rehab so I can enjoy it for another 180k miles. I have a couple questions
that I hope someone can answer. First, I would like to rebuild the
suspension including replacing the springs. Any comments on recommended
setups including stock verses custom aftermarket kits. I plan to drive the
car on a regular basis in Washington D.C. (some of the worse streets around)
so a hard core handling package is probably not a great idea but a modified
setup with reasonable spring rates would probably work. Any idea who would
be a good supplier for the kits, springs and shocks? I also plan to replace
the engine. Although it is running well, the compression values are on the
low end. Rather than just going the remanufactured route, does anyone have
any recommendations on performance mods that might be worthwhile? Any engine
suppliers that you might recommend? Again, the desire for driveability along
with weekend fun cruising is the goal. Finally, the gearbox has been
bulletproof. While the engine is out, its probably a good idea to rebuild.
Any comments on that process. Is better to rebuild locally (I would shop it
out) verses exchanging for a rebuilt box. Any ideas of a first rate
rebuilder for gearboxes. Lots of questions, lots of time. All input is
welcome. Thanks!!!
