Drunk driving, may be too intense for younger listers.
As I understand it, in Turkey, if they catch you driving drunk, they shoot
you. Right then. On the spot. (It may not be Turkey, but this REALLY IS the
penalty for drunk driving somewhere . . . )
DUI needs to be an absolutely zero-tolerance crime. Enough of us have
prowled junkyards looking for Audi parts to see plenty of mangled and
demolished cars - some of them still have empty beer bottles in the back
seat! What scares me is not so much the destroyed cars, but the
reddish-brown stains on the driver's seat and steering wheel - and the
marks made by the jaws of life desperately trying to extricate the survivors.
The specific charge for DUI needs to be "attempted negligent homicide with
reckless endangerment". Getting drunk is a VOLUNTARY act - no one is forced
to do so, or has to do it - it is DELIBERATE. Getting drunk is also your
own business - until you decide to get into a car and drive around on
public roads - at that point it becomes EVERYONE'S business.
No one on this planet has the right to risk other people's lives "for fun",
or "as recreation". In sheer self-defense, we should have DUI made
attempted murder, and punished accordingly.
