Quattro curiousity

Each year a new Carrera 4 hit the street, the journalists would mention
something to the effect of "new, improved AWD is better than last year and 100
lbs. lighter!". What AWD does Porsche use and how does it compare to Audi's
Quattro system? Is the genealogy of the Quattro technology explained
somewhere? Any good books on this? Synchro and Quattro are the same thing,
right?
