I have had the problem happen four or five times in the year that I have
owned my car, all but once on the right front.  On my last excursion on a
chip and seal "road" I picked up a pebble on each side.  To my knowledge
the backing plates are not bent or otherwise damaged.

It's more of an annoyance than anything, because I don't think the pebble
is doing any serious damage.  It sure sounds bad while it's rubbing against
the backing plate, though.
