Help:100CS Tranny

Has anyone had a problem with their 100CS automatic tranny? My father
has a '92 with 77,000miles that will run fine for awhile, then you hear
a loud clunk and it will not shift correctly, it will not downshift and
when you start out the car is in a higher gear so you cannot accelerate.
Stop the car and let it sit for awhile and then everything is fine for
about 5 miles. Not very convenient for getting around......Local shop
wants to put in a new tranny, place is actually know to be reputable,
but I thought these tranny's were bulletproof?

I know most Audi problems are usually common in nature (hydraulic pumps,
seat heaters, etc.). Any BTDT with this one?
