V8 Troubles - Engine Repair AND Mechanic Problems

ARRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHH!!!!

[Rant mode ON!!]

Had the timing belt go on my V8 a few weeks ago. Supposedly, the timing
belt was replaced at 58K according to the previous owner and the
markings on the timing belt cover. But, after a hellacious trip home
from being on the road all week, I got into my V8 at the airport,
started the car and heard this terrible noise. It literally sounded like
a diesel. I drove approximately 1/2 mile and shut it down. After that,
it didn't restart.

Nevertheless, I had it towed to my NEW mechanic. His diagnosis was that
the timing belt "jumped" a tooth on the gear. So I believe that either
the timing belt was never replaced or at the very best, not replaced
properly. The strategy was to replace all 16 intake valves, timing
belts, and required work to bring the engine back into spec. I accepted
the BAD news and authorized the work.

This guy was highly recommended by a well respected member of the list.
I still believe that this mechanic is very knowledgeable, especially of
the V8. However, my car has been at the shop for over SIX WEEKS now! I
understand that he is a one-man show with only an assistant, that this
was NOT a planned/scheduled repair, that this is NOT a simple repair and
that it takes time to order parts.

The car has been promised to be completed for the last two weeks and the
response that I keep getting is "this is a complex job that requires
many man-hours".

I understand that it is a complex job, but..........SIX WEEKS!!!! COME
ON!!!

Someone tell me that I'm not "over-reacting" to this!

I'll also accept any other reputable mechanic referrals in the Dutchess
County, NY area for future reference.

Does anyone know the approximate labor hours for a top end rebuild such
as this for the V8 and the recommended scope of work?
