re: Steering racks on 100/5K
I doubt that the rack from a 1983 would work in the 1989 100. I see you
are in the UK and I'm not sure what differences may exist between your cars
and the U.S. versions.
I believe in the U.S. these cars switched from a system using regular PS
fluid to the mineral oil (Pentosin) sometime in the early 1980's. Not sure
of the exact time of the switch, but I believe in 1985 the 5000's were here
were using mineral oil.
I know the 89 100 uses mineral oil. Not sure about the 83.
Another difference is the 89 100 has a different type of banjo bolt seal
than the pre-1988 5000. The '89 uses O-rings and the earlier type used
copper washers. I'm not certain when the change took place, but I think
1988 5K used copper washers. The newer style hoses using O-rings wouldn't
seal properly with the earlier style racks that use copper washers.
