Hope springs eternal (maximum Audi content)
AutoWeek has a neat item in its 7/13 issue that should give hope to
anyone who has wanted to import a non-U.S. certified RS2 or other Audi
hot rod past or present that we statesiders have drooled over from afar.
Attached to the bill (H.B. 2691) reauthorizing the Nat'l Highway Traffic
Safety Administration (ironic, isn't it) is a provision that would
loosen the tight loophole that presently lets in only the occasional
non-certified ride.
Under the current law, such cars can be brought in for "competitive
racing events" only. Under H.B. 2691, they could be imported for
"competitive racing events, show or display," which I interpret to
effectively mean you could find room for that RS2 in your garage if
you're careful not to make it your daily driver. My guess (word
underlined and italicized) is that that will be the case if DOT and
NHTSA don't try to enforce the expanded loophole too literally, which I
do not think they have the resources, inclination or attention span to
do. What think others on the list experienced in such matters?
By the by, AutoWeek says "enthusiasts" are credited with getting the
loophole widened. We know who we are.
