After Run relay

This post is for everyone who keeps personal archives of fixit tips from
the list.

I have just completed this repair and so far it appears to work. The
transistor is NPN silicon - TIP31. It indeed was 99cents at Radio Shack.
I was only able to determine the value of the burnt resistor because my
mechanic gave me a used, nonburnt relay. However now I have a spare and
if someone needs to know the value of a particular component I'm willing
to help out.

This was sent to me:
I did fix a potentially expensive problem with $1.00 worth of parts.
The turbo coolant pump wasn't operating. Ohmed out the wiring, pump runs
ok,
must be the relay. Opened the relay and sure enough, its expensive
little
guts are charred. Managed to get a part number off the burnt transistor
(SGS-Thomson BD435), got a data sheet off the Thomson web page, went to
RShack
and found a comparable NPN transistor(TIF-31), soldered it in place along
with
a new, beefier 1/2 watt 100 ohm resistor from the junk drawer, plugged it
in,
and WOW! it WORKS! The relay is $105.00 from the dealer, $80.64 from
Carlsen.
RShack transistor was 99 cents.

I have the feeling that when the coolant pump goes the sensor keeps
calling it thru the relay and the transistor and various other parts in
the relay overheat and die. At 16 cents I replaced the resistor first.
Didn't do it, new one charred. Replaced both components. Ran car with A/C
on, after-run fan ran for less than 5 minutes after a 30 minute city
drive. If your relay is charred, your after-run components go to default
and the fan will run for 15 minutes after every little drive. Then you'll
be replacing alternators and batteries as I did, following all those
threads over which battery is best; alternator output, etc.etc. etc.

Not putting anyone down here. Often the only problem is my lack of
knowledge and I truly apreciate everyone's help. I love my car but I
probably be too pissed off over the repair costs to keep it, if it
weren't for this list.
