Swapping in a 2.2 will be a complete waste of time. You can have mine
when I yank it out if you want :)
The only reason to go through this headache would be for a 2.3, or for
even more fun a nice 5k turbo conversion. BUT, I think it would be far
better/easier/cheaper to build a nice VW motor for your 4k. Parts are
cheap, plentiful, and you can build the exact engine you want for your
needs.
As for the rear discs, you can get these from an Audi 80/90. Since
you'll need new brake cables anyway, there's no reason to wait around
for a Coupe so-equipped. One of the Coupe web pages on the net tells you
exactly how to do this.
Remember, a 2.2 is only 110hp, and you'll know it every time a GTI pulls
up next to you.
