my experience is with the US spec cars ... i.e. WX engine ... YMMV.

I'm thinking that the "pop" is a backfire into the intake manifold.  Has the
car run as well as it did before the problem, now once you get it started?
I'm wondering if that backfire didn't pop a hole in an intake line
somewhere.  Another possibility is that the "hot start" mechanism is causing
your engine to become flooded.  Do you hear a relay clicking on and off
every few seconds while starting hot(warm)?  If so, you might want to try
disconnecting the connector on the cold start injector while starting when
the engine is hot (or removing the "hot start pulse relay" if you can figure
out which one it is ...

You never said whether or not you got spark.  I would assume that since you
do get the engine to fire that the spark is not the problem, but since the
ECU will often shut the spark off when it sees something amiss it would be
good to know whether or not you see spark.  You might want to remove the
coil wire from the distributor cap when testing for spark.
