A4 fuel gauge Qs

I took my '96 A4 in for service to have 2 problems fixed
1.  Creaking clutch pedal
2.  Fuel gauge that does not
     (a) register full tank
     (b) drops to zero when tank is between 1/4 - 1/3 full

The service tech said they have to order a new clutch master cylinder 
and a new instrument panel.  The problem with replacing the entire 
instrument panel is that the mileage will be reset to zero.  :(

Only upside I could think of (hope for) is that, perhaps, I could 
upgrade my intrument panel to one with the trip computer/radio 
display.  Is this realistic?  Perhaps I could replace the guage face 
at the same time.  Appreciate any tips/advice on how to make best of 
this less than desirable situation.
