Re: help with a speeding ticket and cool driving story stuff...

>Anyway, I drive a beat-up ol' 200 and I too get PO'd with "driving
lights". Especially from BMW drivers who never seem to know that they have
their fog lamps on all the time. Fog lamps seem to be used alot these days
as normal BMW driving lamps.
I am sure that what I express here is regarded as politically incorrect in
some circles of the q-list. But...
Driving lights and fog lights are two totally separate entities. Driving
light put out a more less conical beam of light which illuminate the road
far ahead of the car but also will light up a whole tree at 200 yards. Fog
lights have a flat, sharp cut-off beam and, if properly aimed, will not
blind on-coming drivers or drivers of cars in front of you. Use of either
in day lit hours is improper, IMO.
BUT... The use of properly aimed fog lights at all times after dark is,
also IMO, appropriate. Perhaps, for those living in a well lighted city,
fog lights may be unnecessary but (for those of us {me} who live so far out
in the boondocks that people who live in the boondocks think we live in the
boondocks) extra lighting is essential if we are to see that deer running
toward a certain collision with our car. Or the possum right at the apex.
Or that dog sniffing at that dead possum. Or... These highways are
***DARK*** at night. Other cars can help provide more light but most of
the time when I'm out at night I rarely even see another car in operation.
It can be like driving deep into a coal mine at midnight with a black hood
over your face.
Good driving lights are also very helpful. If used, stay on your toes and
dim them *before* they cause a problem for another driver. A relay
controlled by the high beam circuit and providing power for the driving
lamps assures that the drivers will be dimmed whenever the high beams are
disabled.
