Cleaning an engine

Hey Guys,
I was planning on cleaning the engine and the engine compartment in my
coupe, but I wasn't sure about any precautions, so I looked in my
Bentley manual, and I read about some kind of wax seal around the
joints  of all of the engine parts.  It said that if the engine is
cleaned, the  wax seal will need to be reapplied.  I want to clean the
engine, so that I can work on it, but I don't want to have to pay large
amounts of money to have this coating reapplied.  Does anyone know what
this is/is it really necassary to have it reapplied?  Thanks for any
help.
