Are you sure? In my 4-speed automatic (I believe it's the same one, in
the '93 90CS, transmission 097) the "Sport" button isn't there to allow
"manual" shifting but rather it changes the shift patterns in automatic
so that the transmission shifts later and you can accelerate faster.

That's weird!
Here's what the book says about failsafe modes; does this look familiar?
"
Should a critical malfunction occur during vehicle operation, the
gearbox continues to operate in the backup mode. If the malfunction
occurs in a forward gear, the backup mode selects 3rd gear [hereafter
3]. The vehicle can also be operated in the "1" "2" "3" and "R"
positions [selected manually? But you said this didn't work for you].
If the vehicle is restarted in backup mode - with selector lever in
position D, 3, or 2 - with subsequent re-appearance of the malfunction,
2 or 3 remain hydraulically engaged until the malfunction is rectified.

He needs a VAG 1551 set to Mode 1, "Rapid data transmission."
Make sure he's doing it right, it could be different from VW's.
"
Conditions for test:
-Battery positive voltage (B+) for vehicle OK
-Fuse No. 4, 12, and 21 OK
-Check Gearbox Ground (GND) connections:
-GND strap on engine block
-GND strap between battery and gearbox
-Battery GND strap
-Selector lever in position "P" and handbrake applied
-Remove cover from relay position 1 at left of plenum chamber
-With ignition off, use VAG1551/1 diagnosis wire to connect scan tool to
relay position 1:
-Black plug to black data link connector
-White plug to white data link connector
-Blue plug not used.

There are a number of different screens; does he say why it doesn't
work? Did he try to reset the transmission computer to its basic
setting?

You should hope so!

Try the dealer, they may have some other diagnostic ideas.
