Re: 944turbo v. ur-q

The 944 turbo is a very nice car; however, if you want some Ur-Q and
mustang-5.0 butt-kickin' power, try to find a Calloway 944. 300+hp. Very
rare(under 50, if I recall, had the conversion done.) We have one sitting
in our garage, albiet in many, many pieces. We're trying to convince my
father to get rid of it; either put it all back together or just sell as-is
and let the new owner throw it back together. It would make an excellent
track car.
My father always used to joke about how much fun stoplights were. The 944
non-turbo was underpowered, and well known for being so amongst mustang
owners. Regularly, he would end up at a light with a mustang 5.0l next to
him; light turns green, he's gone, they're still wondering what happened.
The 1987 944 turbo was the first production car to have dual airbags
standard, interestingly enough. It also has exceptional handling
characteristics because of an almost 50/50 weight split, thanks to the
gearbox hanging over the rear wheels, among other things. This also gives
it pretty damn good winter driveability. My father daily-drove an '83
calloway for 13 years, which was when he rear-ended a pontiac. He then
bought a '87 turbo shortly thereafter and drives it as a daily today.
All in all, one of Porsche's very best cars. Nice styling, great handling,
lots of power, and reliable. I do hear the suspension is _very_ touchy
though; even a slight misalignment will make the car drive like crap.
Rear passenger space sucks though. I've never been able to fit in the back
since I turned 10 or so.
