86 4KCSQ gas pedel - what holds it to the cable?

Car: 1986 Audi 4000 CS Quattro
Miles - 160k

My gas pedel 'broke' off from the cable last night. Looking at it from the
floor - it appears to connect to the cable by a silver thing. The pedel in
on one side, and the cable starts on the other. What I'm not sure about is
what holds the pedel to the block thing. I looked all over the floor and
didn't see any washer or clip, but there must be something to hold it on.

Any ideas?
