Sounds like what it would do if your timing belt jumped a
tooth, but 
I doubt that's what happened, read on...

It's a fuse in the row closest to you, as you stand on the
left side 
of the car, facing the engine compartment.  It is in a row
of spare 
fuses, but is actually used in the system.  I think it's the
last 
one on the right, if not, it's towards the right (rear of
the car).

It's a row of "inline" fuses, as opposed to a row of
parallel ones.

If that fuse is missing or blown, your car will sputter and
run poorly.
