Searching the archives seems to be an effort in futility, the
     search engine really sucks.

Either the dealer who sent the car to the detailer or the
detailer owe you a "rebuilt" unit. Audi dealers charge
between $75-$85 for a rebuilt unit, don't forget to take
the old unit in when you get rebuilt, there is a $425
core charge for the old one.

As for the generic code, yes and no. The code was missing
when I bought my V8Q, I asked a friend who works at the parts
dept. for a local dealer to get me the instructions (I don't
have them anymore, loaned the fax to friend and when I got
it back it was unreadable) for reprogramming the radio.
The code was either 0000 1001 0110 but you needed to input
it in a certain way. It unlocked my radio, but I went ahead
and got the rebuilt unit anyway, it was on the dealers dime,
besides, I still didn't have the right code, just a working
radio. The generic procedure to unlock only works one or
two times, according to the instructions from Audi. Get in
touch with me via private email if you Really need the
generic code instructions, I'm sure I can get another
    copy of the directions.

Also, don't be tempted to put a different rebuilt Bose unit
in the car. The rebuilt price for the different Bose units
is the same, and the dealer may try and give you a newer or
"better" model in exchange, BUT, you'll get a big THUD when
you turn the radio on and off if you don't replace it with
the exact same model you have in the car now. BTDT.

MG> We aren't going to use the radio that much (one in '89 911 has
MG> probably been used a total of 4 hours..), so if we can't find the code
MG> we'll forget it..How good is the system anyway?

In terms of quality and sound, I consider it excellent. That's
just my personal opionion, a self professed non-audiophile, no
     flames please.

... I haven't lost my mind; it's backed up on tape somewhere!
