You are correct, that is the sound of water hitting the fan in the corners.
I'll bet it's the right-handlers. Mist out the vents, damp - maybe even
smelly - air. How about water dumped on your passenger's feet on
acceleration? From underneath the car, run a piece of wire up the drain
line(s). Perhaps someone who has done this more recently than I can
recall whether the blower housing has a drain line as well as the
evaporator housing drip tray.
