Cat failure

Hi,

Recently I noticed a rattle on acceleration in my '94 90Q.  Sounded like
something loose in the exhaust.  Turns out it was the catalytic converter.

My question is this, the (just new to me) car has only ~65000 kms on it.  
Is it normal for a cat to fail this early?   I've heard of cat failures
if you overfill oil (I guess there's no way to tell if the PO did this) 
etc... and I just wonder if there's anything else I should check before 
the car goes off warranty!
