A transmission without a filler plug?

I'm having trouble correctly changing the fluid on my '95 Quattro. I gave
up doing it myself because of the $40 tool required to remove the drain
plug. My mechanic got the tool, drained the fluid, then COULDN'T FIND THE
FILLER HOLE.

Two-hours later after removing the transmission mount, my mechanic decided
that the "reverse linkage bolt" that they removed was also the filler plug.
This bolt is on the forward, right-side of the transmission and sits in a
protrusion from the transmission.

Finally the specs call for 6pts (3qts) of fluid, yet they added 4.8qts.

Can anyone confirm the filler plug location and the proper quantity of
fluid, I'm concerned that it may be overfilled.

Thanks,
