Re: Can someone in CA let me know how a turbo conversion is legal?
In a message dated 98-08-06 01:18:05 EDT, you write:
<< I got the pamphlet from CARB regarding engine swaps and they ARE legal as
long as you install a certified engine (as the MC engine is) AND you
install ALL the emission equipment that came with the original engine.
That means knock sensors, ecu, decel valves, solenoid cutoff valves, fuel
distributor etc. The engine is considered a replaceable component. I had
the opportunity to get a NF code engine (130HP) to swap into my old 5ks but
so much of the emissions stuff was missing, I couldn't do it without a
major parts hunting expedition. Oh, and you can't backdate the engine,
i.e. you can't put a simpler '83 5kT engine into your '85 4kq, at least not
in good ole California.

Althouhg I am not an expert in California laws everything I've heard or read
has said that as far as emmissions are concerned the vehicle must meet
emmissions for the latest year be it the chassis year model or the engine year
model. For example if I took a 1995 A4 and put a 1974 100ls motor in it the
car would have to meet emmissions for 1995 model year, for the cahssis, if I
did the reverse the car would sitll have to meet 95 model year emmissions
except this time for the engine...
