There's lot of software for Mac. As well as for non-Windows equipped PCs,
Amigas or even Atari computers. The problem is, Micro$oft thanks to it's
marketing efforts worth $$$$$ has convinced most people that if you don't
keep buying the very latest software, you won't be able to do anything and
your computer will turn into a useless piece of junk. This is simply not
true. On my desk at work sits a Pentium 200 with 64 megs of RAM and 4GB
hard drive. The company I work for develops software for Windows, so that's
what's needed to run Visual C++ and assorted stuff. I'm not impressed at
all. At home I have an old 386 PC (which is soon to have Linux installed)
and an Atari ST (anybody remember these? ;-) I picked up for $40. _Both_ of
these computers fully satisfy my needs. I do not have to get MS Word 8.0
for Win98 to edit and print a letter. A simple freeware DOS editor for PC
will do fine, just like any editor for Atari (and it has even windows and
icons, although the operating system only takes 192KB of ROM). This
software is fast, stable, simple and efficient. This is much like with
cars. The manufacturers are telling you "look, this is a fine car, it has
dual airbags and cup holders. Everybody is driving it, so it must be good.
Get rid of that old crap of yours and buy this new flashy one". But we,
Audi fans know that a 15 years old Quattro is still much better all around
car, despite it may look somewhat outdated and lack some bells and whistles
the newer cars have. Just my $0.02 and sorry for the wasted BW.
