We recently lost a dog. She was with us for 13 years, and was really
part of the family. Until you've had a dog for that long, and a fairly
bright one, you don't realise how bizarrely rich the communication can
be. I guess in our terms you could say she knew around forty words,
but she intuitively recognised a whole lot more actions. I'm sure
she thought me spectacularly stupid on many occasions.
Anyway - I've been campaigning since then for a replacement, ideally
a mongrel with either German Shepherd or Rottweiler traces. Something
big, at ease with itself, and healthy. Yesterday, 'er indoors came back
with stories of a pure-bred German Shepherd litter nearby. We will see.
