1. Check the voltage on the red (thin) wire that connects to the starter.
Should be 12 V when the key is turned to the "start" position
No : Check further up the circuit. On a 4000, the signal wire to the
starter goes from a connector behind the engine mounted(if memory serves)
on the firewall or really close. Check the ingnition key switch ( easy to
replace mine went bad at 220,000 miles)
Yes: Probably need a new starter. No use replacing just the solenoid --
they are almost as expensive as the rebuilt starter motors. Mine died last
year (240,000) and I replaced it myself (relatively easy to access on a
4000S, not sure about the 4000q. There was one catch --- you must remove
the engine mount cover plate on the rh side of the engine and than the
starter can be pulled through the top of the car, otherwise, it won't come
out. It is mentioned in the Benteley, but I ignored it and it cost me 2
hours of frustration under rain last november. With the plate out, it's a
snap. Read the Benteley carefully !
