Re: Temp & Oil
To: dendrite
John,
My '92 100CS is the same way, only when FULLY warmed does the coolant
needle reach the first broad mark. This behavior (Europeans may add a "u"
in there) is different from my previous malfunctioning multi-function
sensor, where the fully warmed coolant registered dead center. When I asked
the mechanic that installed the multi-function sensor about it, he said
that they're all different (didn't make me feel better), which is why Audi
did not bother to include coolant temperature values on the coolant gauge.
I'm assuming that you are guesstimating the oil temp, since I don't recall
a 90C mark on the gauge, but that seems reasonable as well, I'm generally
in between the first non-numeric mark and the 130C mark.
The second question... yes, 5 bar is normal during steady operation. Idle
will fall into the 1.5 - 2.5 bar range.

Subject: Temp & Oil
Okay, it's probably obvious that I'm trying to get use to my new Audi.
So far, it's pretty great. Once the dealer fixes the transmission, I
think I'll be in a better mood all the way around. I've also noted that
it make a sort of "clunk" going into neutral (to my surprise).
Questions:
This 1993 100CS does not seem to get warm . . . or should I say that the
engine doesn't seem to get very hot. The H20 (Coolant) temp seems to to
stay lower than between the two broad marks and the oil temp seems to
stay around 90 degrees (centigrade) (also below the two broad marks.
Finally, is 5 bar oil pressure (i.e. nearly pegged to the right) normal
for this car while it is in steady operation at highway speeds?
