Subject: Odd radiator fan(s) behavior

My radiator fan(s) seem to operate at the exact opposite time I'd expect
them to. When I am moving (high or low speeds) the fan comes on full blast.
When I am stopped, it turns off. I replaced the thermoswitch about 3 months
ago, and the new one had a different part #, but the same temp ranges for
the different fan speeds. I ordered the part thru an Audi dealer (Langan in
NY, Osman's workplace), and was told the switch I got is a new pin # that
replaced the old one. Do you think this maybe the cause, or should I look
elsewhere in the cooling system? TIA.

Craig: I'm not very familiar with the V6, but typically, audis run the
radiator fan at low speed when the A/C is on. To check the function of your
cooling fan, warm up the car, park, and pop open the hood. Turn off the A/C.
The fan should not be on. The car will heat up, and the fan should run
briefly to cool it down, then shut off again. This cycle should continue.
Now, turn on the A/C. The fan should come on low speed.
If you drive the car hard, then stop and pop the hood, while the engine is
still running, the higher speed radiator fan may come on after a minute to
further cool the radiator. If this is not how it is operating, report the
symptoms back here; you may have a blown resistor pack.
