It might have more to do with the book value of the
car. When you take mileage into consideration, some
"book" values for Audis are downright laughable.
On some models two wheels at list price would
total the car.
Sometimes it goes the other way, like when the
wifes' 84 5KS was hit. The insurance company
wanted to total the car for $1200, I settled for
$1150.00 and kept the car. The deciding factor
in their settling may have been when I mentioned
that the longer they took to settle the more it
looked like I'd need a lawyer, and he recommended
that I check on some "minor" aches and pains to
make sure they weren't caused by the accident.
Had a check Fedexed the next day for $1150.
To me the 5KS is worth much more than this, if I
didn't have it I know I'd have to spend at least
$4K to get a car as mechanically sound as this
one is at 175K+ miles. Expecially since I've
spent many a weekend over the last few years
doing all the "fun" repairs on this particular
model. Many of which would have been nightmares
without the help of Quattro Listers.
