You are absolutely correct.  That is one side of
the equation.  The 
other side is that in addition to the parts being
expensive, the resale 
value is very low (in the U.S.).

The way to make this work in your favor is to buy
damaged vehicles, 
and use parts from other "totalled", or simply
cheap ones to fix it.
