Re: 3 basic 85-87 4kq questions

>1. Where and how do you access the bulbs behind the differential
locking/electronic gauges? All my bulbs no longer work and I have never
seen one that is lit up. Is is a basic sold everywhere bulb or is it a
bulb like the ones in the instrament panel that I have had to buy at the
dealer.

To access these bulbs, pull the climate control vent lever out, the
shifter knob and boot off, and grab a phillips head screwdriver. Make
sure you have decent light (as always), because some screws are a wee
bit hidden. The console frame pulls away, and the diff lock display
panel is held in w/ a couple more screws. I have replaced every damn
bulb back there, and every one of them came from a car in a junkyard.
They are the same as most of the ones behind the instrument cluster. My
recommendation is pull out the ones you need, then go to a yard and take
every single bulb from behind the cluster and everywhere else you can,
matching the ones you have, and taking a few more for future use.

R & R of console should take a couple hours if you're playing around and
haven't been there before.

My trip computer stopped working a while back (likely a vaccuum leak),
and I can't remember what the deal was... it was, however, somewhat
inaccurate.

>>3. Has anyone mounted the Hella 500 (round rally style) or any similar
light such as the Bosch round aux lights on an 85-87 4k before. I have
seen pictures on the web with them mounted on top of the bumper. I
cannot
find anywhere else on a 85-87 4k to mount the ones I just ordered. I
can
also mount them in front of the bumper with some steal strips. I saw
someone do this with a GTI and it looked very cool. It seems the lights
would get backed into parking on the street like I have to thou

I have Hella 500s on top of the front bumper. I tried looking around
for a better light system, but $ for $ the Hella's light the road up
pretty nicely. I drilled through the bumper figuring it ain't a show
car, although I keep it pretty nice. Form follows function. They're
easy to adjust, and, if necessary, replace if hit (which mine were,
along with the grille and one headlight... the lights do protrude about
a half-inch past bumper's extention).

I have since used extra caution as to where I park in relation to other
cars, etc, and figure for $60 or whatever, the extra lighting is really
well worth it.

Hope this helps,
