IMO, Dave, fraud it is.
I had an experience with my fiendly (sic) local dealer's service
department. I was charged for a brand spanking new instrument cluster
printed circuit board ($301) when I was having speedometer problems some
years back. When I was still having troubles later I opened it up and
found that the PC board was the original with the addition of four drops of
fresh solder. The total bill was $666. Hmmmm. Any significance to that
number? :-)
Needless to say, we went a few rounds over that. I got my money back. I
probably let them off too easily since I didn't report their activity to
the state. But, after I had been inside the IC I felt like I had probably
destroyed evidence of their fraud.
These people (Bert Wolfe, Charleston, WV) are good to buy from. The Audi
sales rep has treated me very well and has had some very good deals for me
over the years (including my $24.5K '95 S6). I feel confident approaching
them when I want to buy. But... My car doesn't enter their shop unless
there is no other recourse.
I have not dealt with you, Dave. (Other than as a friend over the 'net.)
I would feel much more confident doing so than with my local guy. I guess
my point was that not all dealers wear white hats. Some wear black hats.
I'd like to believe that they all were good guys. Unfortunately, my
experience has, to me at least, not born that out.
