Re: Importing a car from Canada
Bill,
Feburary 1996 I imported my 1988 90Q from Canada to the US
through Detroit. I was moving back to the US after living in
Canada for 10 years. I was required to furnish a certificate
of compliance from Audi stating that the vehicle met all US
requirements for the year in which it was sold, change the
speedo from KM to Miles (which I did myself) and pay duty
(approx 3% of book value - their little yellow book)
November 1997 I imported a 1993 S4 from Canada to the US
through Detroit. I was required to furnish a certificate of
compliance from Audi stating that the vehicle met all US requirements
for the year in which it was sold, change the speedo from KM to Miles
(which I had a dealer in Canada do - though I supplier the new
Speedo from Carlsens) and pay duty (approx 3% of book value
- their little yellow book) By the way I found out the hard way that
I had to pay sales tax on the car when I registered it in Wisconsin.
5.5% of 22K adds up in a hurry when you are standing at the counter
with $40 bucks in your hand to pay for plates.
Best of Luck and let me know if you need more info.
