Re: Importing a car from Canada
Bill
If a car is in safe operating condition, and it was also sold in the United
States, there are no problems improting it from Canada. My parents and some
friends have just done this over the last few years.
This is what you have to do. Contact Audi of Canada and ask them to write a
letter (addressed to whom it may concern) that this vehicle conforms to all
Canadian and American regulations (ie. safety standards, etc.) at the time
of original sale, they should be familiar with this kind of note as this
happens all of the time. You DO NOT need to change speedometer or anything
else unless the car is not in a safe, driveable condition.
Once you have this letter, just take the car to the border and drive it
across. Of course you should stop and tell the US customs people that you
are bringing this car in as they will want to see the paperwork to ensure
it is not stolen and that it is insured.
Due to NAFTA and the Canada-US Free Trade agreement, there should be no
tarriffs, customs nor any other charges. I say should because there are
always some slight exceptions and because there are usually small fees
involved when you deal with the government.
For more info, call up US or Canada Customs. They have a booklet
specifically about importing and exporting cars between Canada and the US.
I hope this helps
