Re: Americans and Stick Shifts
Hi All!
Learned to drive at 15 in a brand new '72 Bug. Very nice of dad to let
me crunch the gears during my learning curve--a steep curve, because he
became quite cross with every engine-killing clutch pop. Was quite
proud to have learned to pilot a *Stick Shift*. Dad, of course, scoffed
at my talent. "In MY day you had to double clutch. Synchromesh is for
sissies!"
Have preferred manual trannies ever since, lately my 5KTQ and a Merkur
Scorpio. As proper German autobahn cruisers, these have proper 5 speeds
and no provision for beverages. Unforunately, since '72, I have managed
to hold a can in my right hand, switching to left when shifting, or
holding it between my legs when serious concentration is required!
My *Other Scorpio* (notice how I avoided saying *wife's car? ;-) has
an AT. My kids make sure they are belted in securely when I
occassionally drive it, as I am prone to stomp the brakes in search of a
missing clutch pedal!
Cheers!
