DOT3 boils at a lower temp than DOT4.  So, you'll not get the level of
performance that you'd get with DOT4.  That's about it but with a bigger
car, it can be a big deal.  They're compatible with each other and you
won't have a problem mixing the two (unlike mixing DOT5 with non-DOT5
fluid) other than you won't get DOT4 performance.  It's easy enough to
flush out the old fluid by filling up the master cylinder and squirting the
old stuff out.  Cheap too.  You want to flush your brake fluid every couple
of years anyways as the stuff collects moisture and gunk which hinders your
braking.
