 GBR> i.e. broken-off exhaust manifold bolts?

They are actually studs, yeah, exhaust manifold.
The problems with some Audi models are so
universal and well know that when writing to
the list many of us unintentionally (sp)
leave off information assuming that it's general
      knowledge.

GBR> Hmm. I was hoping for 'replace all seals, also all non-metal
GBR> hoses.' Would that be worth a try?

The damage has been done. The steering rack has to be
changed, a rebuilt unit is your best bet, the rack
in the car is probably scored and damaged beyond
"in house" rebuilding after running with ATF. Same
for the hydraulic pump, the pump isn't your average
PS pump (unfortunatly), it pressurises the hydraulic
fluid to over 150 bar, that's over 2200 PSI. It needs
this pressure to compress the nitrogen in the "bomb"
(also compomised by ATF) which gives you power assisted
brakes. The plus in this design is that you have full
power assist for at least ten brake applications even
if the engine isn't running or the pump isn't working.
As for the hoses, I've tried having the ends fitted to
hydraulic hose, the hoses started seeping a few months
later, bought the OEM hoses and they are still nice and
      dry eight years later.

GBR> Hmm. Coming to think of it, there is a connector with no cable
GBR> going to it on top of the Pentosin reservoir.

GBR> What else would the light be warning about?
GBR> (No sensor --> light on?)

It might work the other way, disconnect the wires
and the light goes out...don't remember, will check
it tomorrow. If the indicator is the triangle, it's
brake/hydraulic fluid sensor, the rest of the faults
have their own icons in the display.

The sensors are simple on/off switches mounted on
      top of floats.

GBR> A/C is broken ("disconnected for more power; I don't use it" -
GBR> this is Massachusetts, but it's still a lame line).

GBR> Is the electronic A/C control module worth saving/selling
GBR> if this car goes to the junk yard rather too soon? :)

The air conditioning is General Motors, same as used on
their own cars. The head unit (the controller w/LED)
and the programmer which goes under the dash by the
glove box. The procedure for repairing the AC has
been posted on the list, and is one of the things the
Bentley Repair manual excells in when it comes to the
      '84 5KS.

If you decide to junk it, offer up the parts on the
list. I bought many a part from fellow listers, but
don't try and make a killing...parts cars are cheaper
      than running ones.

GBR> The power mirrors are a curiosity - on both, pushing either left/right
 GBR> or up/down produces only left-right movement...

It's probably corrosion on the switch, I took it apart on
my car, cleaned it up with a dremel tool and it's worked
fine ever since. That's one of the things I like about
the 84, lots of serviceable parts.

I'm in Boston, and this car sounds awfully familiar. Did
the owner live/work/study in the Allston area? I went
to look at a dark '84 5KS, saw the automatic tranny and
the large red puddle under it, no, gracias. Cloth
      interior?

      Good luck,

      BCNU,
