Thanks for pointing out the differences and after checking them all I can confirm it was a 20vt... I would agree that opening the bonnet and looking at the cam cover is the easiest way to tell?

It may not have been rust on the oil pan maybe just  brown coloured dirt? It was fairly dark in the service bay.

p.s. The *only* 20vt engined Audi's (sold by VAG Canada) in  Canada are S4's and S6's.
