Thanks to all who responded to my gum problem. I got a variety of suggestions.
I decided to try what I had in the house first. Figured why spend money on the
many products suggested if I didn't need too. It went like this: 

cold cream, didn't work
ice, didn't work
peanut butter, may have helped
WD40 was the winner!
Of course, all may have contributed slightly to the end result. Now I'm ready
to attempt that scratch. I'm a little afraid of that one...I could make it
worse. In case I chicken out, where can I find someone to do a good compound,
wax job?
