The precautions you suggest are quite appropriate.  My
(soon-to-be-sold-I-hope) '89-200tq has a mechanical boost gauge.  Maximum
boost settings were made incrementally with an eye toward looking for
impending mechanical disaster.  None was seen at boosts of up to 18 psig
(or 2.2 bar).  I stopped there.
