Electrically controlled air switches (air valves). The controller box is
electrical, and it operates the solenoids, which open and close vacuum
lines to control various flaps and valves. Rube Goldberg lives and is alive
and evidently quite well, working with team door handle at Audi, on loan
from GM.

To my knowledge (and I am NOT an air conditioning pro), the compressor
(GM-A-6) dryer, controller box, most electronics, control head and most
sensors are GM. The evaporator and condenser may be, but have Audi-specific
changes. The vacuum motors, ductwork, flaps, vents, heater core, blower,
heater box are all Audi.
And rest assured, the prices at your dealer are ALL Audi, no matter what
the origin of the parts!
I was recently told by a buddy of mine who fixes MB for a living that I
overpaid ($140) for the A6 compressor I just bought wholesale from a jobber
- he said I shoulda said it was for a Chebby (don't know what model) and it
would have cost me $60. Rats.
