belt quest
Huw and I recently described our dissatisfaction with the fit of certain
v-belts on our Audis. In my case, it's the hydraulic pump's belt which
seems too narrow and is a bit twisted. Today I stopped at a nearby Bosch
parts supply and bought the belt they had listed for the '91 200q hydraulic
pump. They sold me a Contitech belt (made in Germany) that is 13 X 996.
However, when I checked the manual and the Bentley, the belt is specified
to be 12.5 X 960. The old belt appears to be 12mm (it possibly could have
been 12.5 when new, but I can't see any dimensions printed on it).
Anyone know if the longer, wider size is actually appropriate here? The new
belt's extra length would partly be taken up by the fact that the belt
would ride higher in the pulleys. I might need to adjust for 0.5" extra
distance (pulley-to-pulley).
