Smoke Machine / insect repellant (83 5kT)

Hi All,

I've got an interesting situation here- it seems like my '83 5kT dislikes
insects as much as my wife does and is dealing with them by blowing large
amounts of blue smoke out of its posterior.  The problem is only present
when the car is cool, and _especially_ when idling.  Driving around town is
plain embarrassing.  When the car warms up the smoke vanishes.  Here's my
idea:

Valve Stem Seals.

Any takers?  I see that the Bentely says that these can be replaced with
the head installed, using the proper VAG tools of course.  Has anyone BTDT?  

Any other advice/experience/ideas/etc?

PS:  There was a fellow a few digests ago that was wanting info on where to
get a decent price on a rear diff lock solenoid for a 4kq, I believe.  I
just ordered one from Miss Linda at Carlsen for $69, qlist price.
